The Uncanny Valley

I have depression. And that’s okay.

If you clicked on this post, I’m gonna guess you did because maybe depression has touched your life in some way. Either you’ve been diagnosed with it, think you might have it, or you know somebody who does and you’re concerned. Before we get into this, just to be clear, I’m not that kinda doctor. That is to say, I’m not a psychologist or psychiatrist. I’m a person who was diagnosed with depression as a 20something, and I’ve spent a lot of time studying and trying different ways of managing it, some good, some not so good. This is what I’ve learned. Continue reading

The Utopian Masculinity of Queer Eye

Since I’ve been more “out” about my involvement in media studies the last couple of years, at any given time I get a lot of people asking me “What are you watching?” For the longest I’ve been recommending Wynonna Earp and the like. It’s still a very fun show, and I continue to advocate for it, but we’ve gotten a new crop of LGBTQ rep featured on network shows like Black Lightning (Stop sleeping on this one, y’all!) and streaming fare such as One Day at a Time and Everything Sucks. I’ll hopefully get to those on this blog as well, but right now I want to put in a plug for the new Queer Eye. Continue reading

So I Married a Skull – Wynonna Earp 1×06

In case you’re new, my Wynonna Earp “Countdown to Season 2” watch-along recap spectacular begins here.

This installment begins in Black Badge HQ with Wynonna and Dolls training in hand-to-hand combat. Wynonna loses to Dolls (“you’re dead again”) but pops back up in that awesomely badass ninja way that requires no hands and a lot of ab strength that I’ll never have. I salute Melanie Scrofano for that level of physical badassery. Despite her agility, Dolls keeps catching her with her guard down until he finally goads Wynonna into beating him, into showing herself what she can do. He suggests she has “limbered up.” She claims it’s yoga, but we know what it was…

The Price of Revenge – Wynonna Earp 1×05

In case you’re new, my Wynonna Earp “Countdown to Season 2” watch-along recap spectacular begins here.

We open this time on a dream sequence. Wynonna walks around the homestead wearing a pretty dress. Waverly screams for Willa and appears on the stairwell, points at Wynonna and calls her Willa. Wynonna looks up, sees a hole in the ceiling, stares up at an angry sky. Waverly shouts, “Get them!” Wynonna looks down to see she’s standing among a pile of bones. She insists that she did “get them.” Then another voice, presumably Willa’s says, “not all of them.” Wynonna sees a young Willa wearing the same dress as her own, screams. Continue reading

Sins & Forgiveness – Wynonna Earp 1×04

In case you’re new, my Wynonna Earp “Countdown to Season 2” watch-along recap series begins here.

We begin this installment with Doc telling Wynonna a tale of the last time he saw his best bropal Wyatt Earp.

Flashback – Doc lies sick in bed with some kind of 19th-century coughing pestilence. I presume tuberculosis. Didn’t everybody have that back then? Wyatt comes in saying the two of them are about to pack up and go to Purgatory to see “a corrupted lawman we gotta fix.” Doc has heard the sheriff in Purgatory is “part devil,” but the officer insists “there ain’t no such thing as devils.” Doc decides he’s too sick to fight: “This is farewell, Wyatt.” We’ll later learn that Wyatt does, in fact, believe in devils and already knows he’s being pursued by them.  Continue reading
